IELTS Band Score Calculator: How Your Overall Score Is Calculated

By the Go IELTS Editorial Team. Updated .

How the IELTS band scale works

IELTS reports results on a scale from 0 to 9, in whole and half bands, for each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The overall band score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half or whole band. Universities and immigration authorities set their own requirements, and they sometimes require minimum scores in individual skills as well as an overall result.

Rounding rules

If the average ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next half band. If it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band. If it ends in .125 or lower, it is rounded down to the nearest whole or half band. For example, bands of 6.5, 6.5, 6.0 and 6.5 give an average of 6.375, which becomes 6.5. Bands of 7.0, 6.5, 6.0 and 6.0 average 6.375, which also becomes 6.5. Bands of 6.0, 6.0, 6.0 and 6.5 average 6.125, which becomes 6.0.

What the bands mean

Band 9 describes an expert user, Band 8 a very good user, Band 7 a good user, Band 6 a competent user, Band 5 a modest user and Band 4 a limited user. The descriptions are published by the test owners. Most universities ask for an overall score between 6.0 and 7.5, depending on the course, while some professions have higher requirements. Always confirm your target with the institution that you are applying to.

How to raise your score

Identify your weakest skill, because improving it usually raises your overall score fastest. Review your errors in each section, take regular timed practice tests, and read our guides to Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. This calculator is an estimate and not an official result.
